Ottawa Smiles Family Dental provides general-dentistry assessments for patients considering dentures, bridges, crowns or veneers. Each option serves a different purpose, and no single treatment is appropriate for everyone. A dental examination, appropriate X-rays and a discussion of your needs are required before treatment can be recommended.
Dentures
Dentures are removable appliances used to replace missing teeth. Complete dentures replace all teeth in an arch, while partial dentures replace selected missing teeth and rely on remaining teeth or other structures for support.
Planning includes examining the gums, remaining teeth, bite and available support. New dentures usually require an adjustment period, and changes in the mouth can affect fit over time. Sore areas, looseness, difficulty chewing or damage should be assessed rather than adjusted at home.
Dental bridges
A conventional bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by using neighbouring teeth for support. Whether a bridge is suitable depends on the condition of those teeth, the bite, the length of the space and oral-hygiene needs. Alternatives may include a removable partial denture, an implant-supported option assessed by an appropriate provider, or leaving the space under observation when clinically acceptable.
Bridges require daily cleaning around and beneath the replacement tooth. Their longevity varies, and future repair or replacement may be needed.
Dental crowns
A crown covers and protects much of a tooth. It may be considered when a tooth has extensive damage, a large restoration, significant wear, a fracture or previous root canal treatment. A crown cannot make every damaged tooth predictable, and some teeth may need a different treatment or extraction.
Crown materials have different appearance, strength and wear characteristics. Your dentist can explain reasonable options, risks, limitations and expected maintenance based on the tooth and bite.
Dental veneers
Veneers are thin restorations placed on the front surfaces of selected teeth, usually for cosmetic changes involving shape, spacing or colour. They are not reversible in every case and may require removal of some tooth structure. Veneers do not prevent cavities or gum disease and may eventually need repair or replacement.
Whitening, bonding, orthodontic treatment or no treatment may be reasonable alternatives depending on the concern. A cosmetic goal should be discussed with realistic expectations; identical or “perfect” results cannot be promised.
What happens during an assessment?
The dentist will review your health history, symptoms, priorities, existing dental work and oral-hygiene needs. X-rays or other records may be recommended when clinically appropriate. The discussion should cover:
- the reason for treatment and available alternatives;
- the steps involved and expected appointment schedule;
- material choices when applicable;
- possible sensitivity, complications or maintenance;
- estimated fees and any expected patient portion; and
- whether referral to another provider is appropriate.
