A chipped or broken tooth can happen during a fall, a sports injury, or while biting something hard. Sometimes a tooth breaks because decay, a large filling, wear, or grinding has weakened it. Even when the damage seems small, an Ottawa dentist should assess the tooth because cracks can extend farther than they appear and symptoms may change.

What to do right away

  1. Rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm water to remove debris.
  2. If there is bleeding, apply clean gauze with steady pressure.
  3. Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek for short intervals if swelling develops.
  4. If you find a tooth fragment, pick it up carefully and keep it in cold milk or a clean container.
  5. Call a dental office and explain what happened, when it happened, and whether you have pain, swelling, bleeding, or a change in your bite.

Do not scrub a tooth fragment, glue it back, file a sharp edge, or chew on the affected side. Avoid very hot, cold, sugary, or hard foods if the tooth is sensitive. Over-the-counter pain medicine may be appropriate for some adults, but follow the label and ask a pharmacist if you have medical conditions, take other medicines, are pregnant, or are unsure.

When the problem is urgent

Arrange prompt dental assessment if there is significant or increasing pain, ongoing bleeding, visible pink or red tissue inside the tooth, swelling, a loose adult tooth, or a bite that suddenly feels different. Facial swelling, fever, or a bad taste may indicate infection and should not be ignored.

Call 911 or go to an emergency department for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of consciousness, or severe facial trauma. A dental office is not a substitute for emergency medical care in those situations.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out

A knocked-out permanent tooth is time-sensitive. Handle it by the crown—the white part—not the root. If dirty, rinse it briefly and gently without scrubbing. If it can be placed back into the socket safely, do so; otherwise keep it moist in cold milk and seek urgent dental care. Do not reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth. The Ontario Dental Association provides additional dental-emergency guidance.

Why teeth chip without a major accident

A tooth may fracture around decay or an older large filling. Long-term clenching or grinding can create wear and stress. A crack may also develop after repeated biting on hard objects. The dentist may ask about the event, symptoms, and dental history, then examine the tooth and bite. An image may be recommended if it is likely to add useful information; read more about dental X-rays in Ottawa.

Possible treatment

Treatment depends on the location and depth of the damage, the health of the pulp, and whether the tooth can be restored. Options may include smoothing a small rough edge, bonding, a filling, a crown, root canal treatment, or extraction. No specific treatment or outcome can be promised before an examination.

Reducing future risk

Wear a properly fitted mouthguard for contact sports, avoid using teeth as tools, and do not routinely chew ice or other very hard objects. If you grind or clench, mention it at your appointment. Regular examinations can also help identify decay, worn fillings, or cracks before they become larger problems.
